About this position

Postdoctoral position at Aarhus University in physics-driven machine learning for transient electromagnetic (TEM) data and subsurface imaging.

The project is based in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, within the Signal Processing and Machine Learning section, and is linked to the Hydrogeophysics Group at the Department of Geoscience. The research focuses on ground-based, airborne, and drone-based TEM data, using the fully differentiable TEM forward-modelling framework anEMone implemented in PyTorch.

The postdoc will develop supervised and self-supervised deep learning methods for TEM inversion, physics-based loss functions, and computationally efficient models for near-real-time or real-time use. The work combines electromagnetic physics, inverse problems, scientific machine learning, and geophysical data analysis, with collaboration from the industrial partner TEMcompany.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, geophysics, physics, or a related field; strong deep learning experience (e.g. CNNs, UNets, Transformers); strong Python and PyTorch skills; experience with scientific computing, numerical modelling, or inverse problems; strong publication record; and excellent English communication skills. Experience with physics-informed learning, TEM modelling/inversion, and geophysical datasets is an advantage.

Funding and terms: full-time fixed-term postdoc for 2 years, starting 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary and employment conditions follow Danish collective agreements. The post also mentions relocation support and practical assistance with housing, childcare, and integration.
