About this position

Stanford University is advertising an open postdoctoral position with faculty mentor Nicole Ardoin in the Environmental Social Sciences area, connected to the Transformation Science Program within the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. The role is designed for a scholar with deep knowledge of transformation science and sustainability transitions, and it focuses on building the intellectual core of a transdisciplinary research program.

The postdoc will work with program leads to expand and synthesize scholarship across disciplinary boundaries, help refine the research agenda, co-author high-impact publications, conduct comparative and literature-based analyses, support funding plans and proposals, and contribute to convenings, workshops, and partnership development with scholars, practitioners, and funders. The position also encourages the development of an independent line of inquiry aligned with the program’s broader mission.

Research themes mentioned in the post include recognizing and characterizing transformation, the politics of transformation, systemic risk, organizing for sustainability transitions, transforming institutions in local governance, and rethinking food systems as a public good. The program emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches and the creation of a collaborative scholarly community.

Eligibility highlights: a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field (for example social sciences, environmental studies, sustainability science, science and technology studies, or public policy); demonstrated expertise in transformation science or related literatures; strong academic writing; training in qualitative and/or quantitative social science methods; excellent communication and collaboration skills; and the ability to work independently. Grant/proposal development experience is strongly preferred.

Funding: the appointment is for 12 months, renewable for up to an additional 2 years depending on performance and funding availability. The expected base pay range is $80,826.

How to apply: submit a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, research statement, writing sample, and three references with contact information. Email the package to [email protected] with the subject line “Transformation Science Postdoc.”
