About this position

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a project on vanadium redox flow battery recycling, with a focus on process optimization and environmental impact assessment. The position is based in Morocco and is intended for a highly motivated researcher with expertise in vanadium and rare-earth element recovery, thermodynamic modeling, and materials characterization.

The project aims to develop sustainable and optimized processes for vanadium extraction and purification from primary and secondary sources, including slags and industrial wastes, to enable large-scale deployment of redox flow batteries for energy storage. The successful candidate will work on hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recovery strategies, battery-grade vanadium purification, thermodynamic simulation using CALPHAD and FactSage, and advanced characterization of vanadium-bearing materials using techniques such as SEM, TEM, HAADF-STEM, XRD, EDS, and LA-ICP-MS.

The role also includes investigation of impurity phase removal, especially Fe, P, Si, and REEs, as well as environmental and economic evaluation through life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to high-impact publications, collaborative proposals, graduate student mentorship, and lab coordination, while supporting the integration of vanadium flows within a circular economy model for battery materials.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Materials Chemistry, Extractive Metallurgy, or Chemical Engineering, with research experience in resource recovery or battery materials. Strong experience in metal recovery from slags or mineral concentrates, thermodynamic modeling, and advanced materials analysis is expected. Excellent English communication skills and a strong publication record are also emphasized. The position has an expected start date of October 2025, and the application deadline is unspecified.
