About this position

Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier is offering a funded postdoctoral position within the EO4Irrig (Earth Observation for Irrigation) project under the ANR LabCom program. The work is based at CESBIO (Centre d’Études Spatiales de la Biosphère) in Toulouse, France, a major French research unit with long-standing expertise in remote sensing, hydrological and agronomic modelling, and water-cycle monitoring.

The postdoctoral researcher will develop, test, and consolidate new methods for retrieving irrigation water use (IWU) at crop scale by assimilating high-resolution Earth observation data into a crop water balance model. The project specifically involves the FAO-56-based MODSPA platform, preprocessing remote sensing inputs, integrating Sentinel-1-derived soil moisture data, incorporating Landsat-derived crop water stress index data, and applying the retrieval methodology to several irrigated areas with in situ IWU measurements. The work also connects to ongoing approaches for mapping irrigated areas within EO4Irrig.

This is a research-intensive postdoctoral role suited to a candidate with strong skills in Python, image processing, remote sensing, and/or land surface modelling. The post requires the ability to work with radar, thermal infrared, and shortwave remote sensing data, and to engage with modelling of water and energy balances. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area, ideally agricultural sciences or soil science.

Funding is provided through a one-year temporary full-time contract. Salary is stated as based on experience, with a net monthly income between 2250 € and 2583 €. The anticipated start date is 1 December 2026, and the application deadline is 6 November 2026 at 12:00 (Europe/Paris).

Applications should be sent by email to [email protected]. The position is hosted by CESBIO in Toulouse, France, within a research environment focused on satellite missions, observational datasets, and the transfer of EO-based methods to operational users. Please note that CESBIO is identified as a security restrictive zone (ZRR), so access requires authorization and compliance with specific security guidance.
