About this position

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Hypersonics at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

This opportunity is for 3 postdoctoral research assistant posts in experimental hypersonics, with work based in Oxford and involving experiments in the university’s hypersonic facilities and international facilities. The research covers high-speed flow physics, experimental fluid dynamics, experimental aerodynamics, wind tunnels, non-equilibrium thermochemistry, radiation, convective heating, supersonic boundary layer combustion, and heat transfer/material–flow interaction for Earth and planetary entry conditions.

The role includes planning and running test campaigns, analysing complex experimental datasets, developing and applying new experimental and optical diagnostic techniques, contributing to publications and conference presentations, and supporting wind tunnel infrastructure development. There is also scope to explore independent research directions where funding allows, and to contribute to wider research programmes and funding proposals.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline, or be near completion with thesis submitted. Strong practical experience with high-speed or high-enthalpy wind tunnels, impulse facilities, or related experimental facilities is required, together with excellent data analysis, experimental design, and communication skills.

Funding and contract: this is a fixed-term postdoctoral research job for 18 months. The post is not described as a scholarship; no stipend, tuition, or fee waiver information is given.

Deadline: 16 October 2026, 12:00 noon.

How to apply: apply online via the University of Oxford e-recruitment system. Include a covering letter/supporting statement, CV, and the names of two academic references.

What's required

Applicants should hold a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline, or be near completion with thesis submitted. Experience in high-speed or high-enthalpy wind tunnels, impulse facilities, or related experimental facilities is required, along with strong skills in analysing complex experimental datasets. The post also requires demonstrated excellence in experimental fluid dynamics, sophisticated fluid experiment design and execution, advanced data analysis, experimental and component design, and optical diagnostic techniques for fluid flow measurement and characterisation. Experience with peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, independent research management, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to support funding proposals is expected.

How to apply

Apply online through the University of Oxford e-recruitment system. Submit a covering letter/supporting statement explaining how you meet the criteria, a CV, and the names of two academic references.
