About this position
Postdoctoral Research Assistant, Graffiti Gazetteer at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Oxford, United Kingdom.
This is a part-time (0.5 FTE), fixed-term post for 12 months in a research project focused on scaling up a digital research infrastructure for secondary epigraphy (graffiti) in Egypt. The role sits within the Graffiti Gazetteer project, now in its second phase, and involves research, data harvesting, grant scoping, and leading data ingest with strong attention to data quality assurance and project data standards.
The post holder will work closely with the project’s software development specialist and report to Dr Hana Navratilova (Principal Investigator). The project is supported by the John Fell Fund and builds on funding from Digital Scholarship @Oxford.
Research interests/keywords: Digital Humanities, Epigraphy, Archaeology, Egyptology, Geospatial Data, ArcGIS, Research Data Management, AI-assisted workflows, grant development.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should hold or be close to obtaining a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline, ideally Egyptology, Archaeology, or Classics. Experience with agentic AI or AI-assisted workflows, Digital Humanities research, geospatial data and ArcGIS, inscriptional or related archaeological datasets, and research data management is expected. Experience contributing to grant development, funding applications, or research proposal writing is also required, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Location: Central Oxford, United Kingdom.
Deadline: 25 August 2026 at 12 noon. Interviews are expected the week commencing 21 September 2026.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
