About this position

The CHIRAX project at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for theoretical linear and non-linear X-ray spectroscopy of chiral molecules in solution. CHIRAX, funded by the European Research Council, focuses on steady-state and time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy using circular and helical dichroism. The project combines synchrotron-based experiments with time-resolved studies at synchrotrons and XFELs, and it is supported by strong national and international collaborations with theorists.

The appointed researcher will carry out electronic structure calculations to predict chiral signals from X-ray absorption and chiral spectroscopies, as well as non-linear optical/X-ray methods for molecules in solution. The role emphasizes accurate treatment of higher-order multipoles beyond standard transition electric dipoles, using ab initio quantum chemistry tools. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to strengthen existing theoretical collaborations, develop new ones, and contribute to analysis, writing of reports and papers, and presentation of results at conferences and workshops.

The position is based in Trieste, Italy, at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., and the successful candidate will have access to in-house computational facilities, with the possibility to request time on larger external resources such as the University of Trieste, CINECA, and the Molecular Foundry. The appointment is a fixed-term 12-month contract, full-time (40 hours/week), with a gross annual salary in the range of €30,814.29 to €32,500.00 depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include accident insurance, supplementary medical insurance, reimbursement for school textbooks, lunch vouchers, and around five weeks of paid holiday per year.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, or a related field, with expertise in quantum chemistry, theoretical spectroscopy, and non-linear phenomena. Experience with X-ray spectra, molecular systems, XFEL or synchrotron simulations is a positive asset. Strong teamwork, time management, and English communication skills are required. The call is open to candidates who earned the PhD within the last 6 years, including those who have completed doctoral research and are awaiting defense.

The application deadline is 15 November 2026. Applications must include a detailed CV, full publication list, relevant supporting information, and contact information for up to two referees; a motivation letter is desirable. Candidates should apply via the Elettra careers website using the provided job link.
