Postdoctoral Research Associate in Agricultural and Food Economics at the University of Reading, working on LESS MALNUTRITION (Local, Equitable, and Sustainable Solutions for Child Malnutrition in Africa).
This is a full-time, fixed-term 24-month postdoctoral position (with a possible extension of up to 6 months) in the Department of Agri-Food Economics and Marketing, School of Agriculture, Policy and Development. The project is Horizon Europe funded and coordinated by Ghent University, with 18 African and European partners.
The role focuses on the economic and innovation spill-over effects of using local ingredients in ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF). The successful candidate will work with the Principal Investigator, Professor Giacomo Zanello, and lead Work Package 5. Research tasks include mapping producers, consumers, markets and trade of candidate ingredients such as chickpea and soybean; analysing household survey, price and agricultural data; assessing effects on production, prices, diet costs, food security, gender and equity; and conducting interviews and case studies with experts, entrepreneurs and RUTF manufacturers.
Eligibility highlights: PhD (or near completion) in agricultural economics, food economics, or a closely related social science discipline; strong quantitative skills in Stata, R or Python; ability to design and conduct qualitative research; peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage; and a good understanding of agri-food systems, agricultural markets and food security in low- and middle-income countries.
Funding and conditions: salaried Grade 6 post at £37,369–£43,099 per annum. Sponsorship may be possible under the Skilled Worker Route. The post is based at Whiteknights Campus and involves collaboration with partners across Africa and Europe, including Wageningen University and African RUTF manufacturers.
