About this position
Heriot-Watt University’s Quantum Photonics Laboratory is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position on AI for Quantum Sensing in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.
The project focuses on developing the next generation of AI-enhanced quantum sensors that combine machine learning with cutting-edge quantum hardware. The successful candidate will work on autonomous scientific instruments that can decide what measurement to perform next, learn from incoming data in real time, and continuously optimise performance.
Research topics include Bayesian experimental design, variational Bayesian inference, reinforcement learning, probabilistic machine learning, and adaptive decision-making under uncertainty. These methods will be applied to quantum sensors based on individual electron spins, with applications in nanoscale imaging, single-molecule detection, quantum networking, and next-generation biomedical sensing.
The postdoc will collaborate with Prof Giovanni Montana at the University of Warwick and Prof Tom Rainforth at the University of Oxford, and will interact with researchers across the UK quantum ecosystem through the Integrated Quantum Networks (IQN) and Quantum Sensors for Biomedical Research (Q-BIOMED) hubs.
This is a fixed-term research position. The post does not mention a stipend, salary, or tuition funding, but it is clearly a paid postdoctoral role rather than a scholarship.
Deadline: Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
Informal enquiries: Prof Cristian Bonato ([email protected]).
