About this position

Imperial College London is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Antibody Engineering and Directed Evolution in the Sormanni Lab within the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The project sits at the interface of experimental protein engineering and computational analysis. The successful candidate will work on high-throughput directed evolution of antibodies and nanobodies, combining yeast display, ribosome display, deep sequencing, and data-driven analysis to improve understanding of the relationship between developability, affinity, and functionality.

Responsibilities include building and screening antibody/nanobody libraries, planning and running selection campaigns, analysing sequencing data, and feeding experimental results into computational models developed by the group. The role also offers opportunities to collaborate with internal and external labs, publish in high-quality journals, present at conferences, and contribute to supervision of PhD and Masters students.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a related discipline with a focus on protein engineering; practical experience in molecular biology and in vitro directed evolution; experience with deep sequencing and data analysis; and knowledge of protein science and structural bioinformatics. Strong teamwork and communication skills are also expected.

Funding and contract: this is a full-time post (35 hours/week) on a fixed-term 12-month contract. Salary/remuneration is provided; if the PhD has not yet been officially awarded, the appointment may be made as a Research Assistant at £45,399–£48,876 per annum. No scholarship or tuition waiver is mentioned.

Deadline: midnight on Sunday 13 September 2026.
