About this position
University of Cambridge is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in auditory cognitive neuroscience at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit (CBU), with its transition into CMBI.
The project is led by Dr Guangting Mai and focuses on the neural basis of audiovisual speech processing in adult cochlear implant (CI) users. The work examines how audition and vision combine to support everyday speech comprehension, and whether visual speech processing during CI rehabilitation leads to adaptive or maladaptive changes in auditory processing and audiovisual integration.
The research uses cross-sectional and longitudinal experiments with human participants, combining EEG and high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT). The findings are intended to inform clinical guidance for CI rehabilitation and may help predict post-implantation outcomes or support neuromodulation strategies to improve speech comprehension.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD in neuroscience, psychology, or auditory/speech sciences; experience with EEG/MEG and/or functional neuroimaging (fNIRS/DOT/fMRI) is expected; experience with clinical populations is highly desirable; Matlab or Python analysis skills are a strong advantage.
Funding: Wellcome Trust funded, fixed term for 3 years full time, or pro rata for part time (preferably 0.7 FTE). Salary range: £37,694–£46,049.
Deadline: 16 October 2026. Apply online via the University of Cambridge recruitment portal, upload a covering letter and CV, and include referee details. Quote reference SU51024.
