About this position

The School of Geography at the University of Nottingham is advertising a fixed-term Post-Doctoral Research Associate/Fellow position linked to the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project “Constructing Climate Coloniality: Histories, Knowledges and Materialities of Climate Adaptation in Southern Africa.”

This research opportunity sits at the intersection of Geography, History, and Environmental/Climate History. The project examines the emergence, evolution, and ongoing forms of climate coloniality in southern Africa, with specific focus on western Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, and southern Malawi. The successful candidate will develop, conduct, and publish research on the (trans)formation of knowledges and practices relating to climate in southern Malawi and/or wider southeast Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The role involves archival and oral history research, contributing to a project database, participating in co-production workshops, and supporting dissemination activities with project partners and local stakeholders. The post offers an opportunity to work on interdisciplinary, high-impact research with international travel for data collection, co-production, and dissemination.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in History, Geography, or a related area is required. Applicants should have experience in archival and/or oral history research, a strong research profile in African history and/or environmental/climate history, experience organising workshops or creative outputs (for example exhibitions or digital history), a good publication record, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried, full-time, fixed-term academic post for 22 months, with salary ranging from £32,080 to £47,389 per annum depending on skills and experience.

Deadline: applications close on 2026-09-06. Apply through the University of Nottingham jobs portal. Informal enquiries can be directed to Matthew Hannaford at [email protected], but applications must not be sent to that email address.
