About this position

Lehigh University is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in control systems, artificial intelligence, and scientific machine learning for fusion energy.

The role is based in the Lehigh University Plasma Control Laboratory / Plasma Control Group and focuses on advanced research for magnetically confined fusion plasmas in tokamaks. Research topics include neural surrogate modeling, model predictive control (MPC), reinforcement learning (RL), hybrid RL-MPC control, state estimation, neural observers, scenario optimization, actuator management, and digital-twin integration in MATLAB/Simulink.

The postdoc will work with Professors Eugenio Schuster and Tariq Rafiq and may collaborate with major fusion facilities such as DIII-D, NSTX-U, KSTAR, WEST, and ITER. The position is connected to the U.S. Department of Energy GENESIS Mission and offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge control/AI research in plasma physics and fusion systems.

Eligibility: applicants should have a doctoral degree completed by the start date in control engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, data science, mechanical engineering, physics, or a closely related quantitative field. Strong skills in control theory and/or AI/ML are required, along with scientific computing experience (MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or C/C++). Experience in plasma control, fusion science, SciML, MPC, RL, state estimation, or HPC is highly desirable.

Funding: this is a full-time, two-year postdoctoral appointment with benefits. The advertised salary range is $63,480-$90,000, with renewal possible depending on performance and funding availability.

Location: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States.

How to apply: submit a cover letter, CV, research statement, and three references through the online application portal. Also email a copy of all materials to [email protected]. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
