About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Integrated Building Deployment and Analysis Group within the Buildings Materials & System Integration Section, Building and Transportation Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate.

This postdoctoral opening focuses on energy economics, applied economics, econometrics, and policy evaluation for residential building retrofitting. The selected researcher will work with a multidisciplinary team spanning economics, engineering, software development, and building energy modeling to evaluate the U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), including its implementation expectations, outcomes, and household energy-cost benefits.

Typical work includes data collection, processing/curation, and analysis of novel administrative and program datasets; econometric evaluation using methods such as difference-in-differences, fixed-effects panel models, matching approaches, and regression-based normalization; and contributions to reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Energy Economics or a related applied economics discipline with a strong quantitative focus. The Ph.D. must have been completed within the last five years, and all degree requirements must be finished before the appointment starts. Strong skills in R, Python, Stata, or SAS are expected; SQL/database management is preferred. Experience with large datasets, reproducible workflows, technical writing, and communicating results to both technical and non-technical audiences is important.

Funding and appointment: the appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL notes competitive pay and benefits, but no stipend amount is listed.

Application: apply via the ORNL careers portal. Submit three letters of reference with your application or email them to Postdocrecruitment@ornl.gov with the position title and number in the subject line. The posting states the role will remain open for a minimum of 5 days and then close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
