About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunity at Duke University in environmental geochemistry and critical metals. The project, led by Professor Heileen Hsu-Kim in Duke’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and connected to the Duke Critical Minerals Hub, focuses on unconventional resources and wastes as potential feedstocks for rare earth elements, cobalt, lithium, and other metals.

The research will examine molecular-level speciation and mineral phase associations of critical metals, evaluate how these associations affect extraction processes, and assess critical mineral resource potential using geospatial and statistical analysis of supply-chain and resource datasets. The role combines laboratory experiments, spectroscopic and chemical imaging tools, leaching studies, data compilation, and resource modeling.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in environmental engineering, geomaterials, earth and environmental science, or a related field. Strong research experience, independent experimental ability, collaboration skills, publication record, and strong communication skills are required. Preferred experience includes ICP-MS, geochemical/material imaging, data management, statistical analysis, and geospatial tools such as ArcGIS.

This is a postdoctoral opening in the United States with an initial one-year appointment and possible renewal for a second year. The post mentions opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, fieldwork, conferences, project meetings, publications, and mentoring students.

To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, and the names and email addresses of three references via AcademicJobsOnline. Applications are reviewed immediately until the position is filled.
