About this position

The University of Oxford is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Oxford Martin School Programme on Forecasting Technological Change, based within the Complexity Economics research group at the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) at the Oxford Martin School.

The project is led by Dr François Lafond, Professor Doyne Farmer, and Professor Max Roser. The research aims to improve understanding of how technologies develop, diffuse, and evolve, with a particular focus on the net zero transition and artificial intelligence. The role involves building a comprehensive database on technological progress and carrying out quantitative research on the drivers of technological change.

Core work includes independent research, quantitative analysis, research project management, preparation of peer-reviewed publications, development and application of research methodologies, analysis of complex datasets, and contribution to research proposals and funding applications. The successful candidate will also coordinate and supervise a small team of part-time research assistants and collaborate across disciplines and partner institutions.

Applicants should hold a PhD/DPhil or be close to completion in a relevant discipline. The post requires strong quantitative and statistical skills, programming experience, and knowledge of complex systems science and/or advanced forecasting techniques. Experience or understanding of the economics of innovation, net zero technologies, and/or artificial intelligence is desirable, including sophisticated applications of large language models. A track record of publications in leading academic journals, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage research activities are essential.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years. The application deadline is 27 November 2026 at 12.00 noon UK time.
