About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Research & Analysis (MEERA) Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate.

The position focuses on industrial onsite energy, renewable energy, and the implementation of onsite technologies for industrial and other large energy users. Research topics include solar photovoltaics, solar thermal systems, wind power, renewable fuels, geothermal solutions, battery storage, thermal storage, and industrial heat pumps, along with analysis of technologies and practices that improve industrial energy efficiency.

The role supports technical assistance for industrial sites, market analysis, report writing, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. It also contributes to DOE’s Better Plants program and broader efforts to help U.S. industry lower costs, improve resilience, and increase energy independence.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field completed within the last five years; strong quantitative and analytical research skills; experience with life cycle energy and cost assessments is preferred. Familiarity with sustainable manufacturing, circular economy research, renewable energy systems, Excel/Python/R, and strong communication skills are advantageous.

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee, United States.

Funding: postdoctoral appointment up to 24 months with possible extension, subject to performance and funding availability; ORNL lists competitive pay and benefits, but no stipend amount is provided.
