About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in nonlinear spectroscopy for research on chemical separations and liquid-liquid interfaces.

The position is based in the Chemical Dynamics Group within the Chemical Transformation Section, Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at ORNL in the United States. The project uses a suite of surface-specific optical spectroscopies, scattering techniques, and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopies to understand ion partitioning, local gradients, and stimulus-driven interfacial behavior relevant to extraction and separations.

Research activities include applying nonlinear optical spectroscopy to liquid-liquid interfaces, using vibrational pump-probe methods to study molecular mechanisms and dynamics, developing new approaches for probing interfaces at and away from equilibrium, analyzing experimental data with computational tools, and assisting with neutron/x-ray scattering experiments. The postdoc will work in a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team with experts in spectroscopy, separation chemistry, and theory.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years, and must finish all degree requirements before starting. Preferred experience includes ultrafast laser-based spectroscopy, infrared vibrational techniques such as vibrational sum-frequency generation, IR-transient absorption, or 2D-IR, plus Python/Matlab, wet chemistry, chemical separations, and liquid-interface studies.

Funding and terms: the appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL notes competitive pay, benefits, and relocation assistance.

Application: apply via the ORNL jobs portal. Submit three letters of reference, either uploaded with the application or emailed to [email protected] with the position title and number in the subject line.
