About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in organometallic synthetic chemistry and advanced materials. The project focuses on synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds for harsh environment materials, including development of formulations and processes for infiltrating preceramic polymer and organometallic compounds into fiber-based preforms to manufacture ultrahigh temperature compounds (UHTCs) structures.
The position sits within ORNL’s Chemical Sciences Division and the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, supporting research in ceramics, carbon/carbon additive manufacturing, and energy-related materials. The successful candidate will contribute to fundamental science and applied development for ceramics and carbon-based composites, publish peer-reviewed papers, and help supervise students, technicians, and staff.
Research keywords: organometallic chemistry, organic synthesis, preceramic polymers, thermosets, ceramic matrix composites, additive manufacturing, high-temperature materials, composite processing, electromagnetic properties of materials.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in chemistry, materials science, ceramic engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field; experience with organometallic synthesis; familiarity with air- and water-reactive compounds; glovebox and/or Schlenk line experience; and knowledge of high-temperature composites curing and processing. Composite fabrication and mechanical testing experience are a plus.
Funding and conditions: This is a paid postdoctoral appointment with competitive ORNL salary and benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available. The role also requires export-control eligibility and the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearance, including drug testing requirements.
How to apply: Apply via the ORNL jobs portal and submit your application materials. Provide three letters of reference, either uploaded with the application or emailed to [email protected]. If you encounter issues, contact [email protected].
Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States.
