About this position

The Rayner and Deane Laboratories at the University of Cambridge are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a short-term, fixed-term project at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR).

This role focuses on malaria host-parasite interactions and the function of a multi-gene family in Plasmodium vivax and related neglected human malaria parasites. The project uses CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering to knockout and tag multiple TRAg genes in Plasmodium knowlesi, alongside existing lines generated by the team, to investigate gene function through cell biological and biochemical assays.

Strong experience in Plasmodium culture and transfection is essential. The team particularly values experience with P. knowlesi, plus advanced molecular biology skills such as Gibson assembly and vector validation. Relevant cell biology expertise includes immunofluorescence, expansion and live imaging microscopy, and flow cytometry.

The position is described as highly interactive and collaborative, with opportunities to contribute directly to collaborative papers and work within a vibrant interdisciplinary environment. The appointment is full-time and fixed-term for 1 year.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Julian Rayner at [email protected]. Applicants should apply online, upload a covering letter and CV, and provide referee details. The closing date is 5 August 2026.
