About this position

Diamond Light Source is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Scientific Software Development based onsite at Harwell, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. The role is a 3-year fixed-term postdoctoral position within the DIALS team, focused on developing scientific data analysis software for diffraction processing in Python/C++.

The successful candidate will work on original research in X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and serial crystallography, developing new physical models, computational methods, and performant algorithms for large and heterogeneous datasets. The work includes improving diffraction analysis for emerging experiments, designing software that can exploit modern computing architectures including GPUs, and contributing production-quality code to an international open-source project used at synchrotrons, universities, and companies worldwide.

The post is suitable for candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline or those close to completion. Strong programming skills, experience with research software, and the ability to develop algorithms and analyse scientific data are essential. Backgrounds in computational science, physics, mathematics, crystallography, imaging, or related experimental techniques are welcome; prior crystallography experience is helpful but not required.

Funding details include a salary of £41,414 to £45,510 per annum, plus benefits such as annual leave, pension, flexible working, volunteering days, and possible relocation support. Applications are via Diamond Light Source’s online application process, and the closing date is 6 September 2026.
