About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in shear strength of ceramics within the Ceramics and Ceramics Composites Group in the Materials Science and Engineering Division.

The project focuses on ORNL’s continued development of methods to quantify the shear (yield) strength of monolithic ceramic materials as a function of temperature. Research activities include hot hardness testing, spherical indentation, postmortem analysis, estimating critical particle size associated with the brittle-to-ductile transition, and developing additional concepts and tests to estimate shear strength. The role also includes building and refining finite element and other numerical models to correlate experimental responses.

This is a postdoctoral opening at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States. The appointment can last up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding. ORNL offers competitive pay and benefits.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years; experience in ceramics/brittle materials, experimental contact mechanics, and microstructural characterization; and immediate eligibility to obtain and maintain DOE Q-Clearance. What's required

Experience in ceramics and brittle materials, experimental contact mechanics, and microstructural characterization is required. Applicants must be immediately eligible to obtain and maintain DOE Q-Clearance. Preferred experience includes brittle materials, indentation/hardness testing, contact damage mechanics, material microstructure characterization, finite element analysis, and numerical analysis. Strong publication record, written and oral communication skills, independence, teamwork, and ability to work in a fast-paced research environment are preferred. Visa sponsorship is not available.
