About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in sparse algorithms within the Discrete Algorithms Group. This two-year postdoctoral position focuses on advancing secure, trustworthy, and efficient AI solutions for scientific applications through the development of state-of-the-art sparse methods for matrices, tensors, and networks.
The researcher will work on large-scale numerical, scientific, and AI models using the Frontier exascale system and collaborate with experts in machine learning, optimization, electric grid analytics, and scientific imaging. The research agenda includes sparse and structured matrix computations, sparse tensor problems, sparse network problems, mixed-precision methods, GPU performance engineering, and theory of parallel algorithms.
Responsibilities include designing novel sparse algorithms, demonstrating scalability on leadership supercomputers, developing mathematical analyses of performance/energy/time trade-offs, publishing in top journals and conferences, releasing open-source software, and collaborating with domain scientists and students.
Eligibility: a PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field; demonstrated research depth in at least one relevant area; and hands-on experience with HPC algorithms for sparse numerical, scientific, or machine learning models. Applicants must have earned the PhD within the last five years and must complete all degree requirements before starting.
Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States.
Application: Submit materials through the ORNL jobs portal. Three letters of reference are required and may be uploaded or emailed to [email protected]. The posting notes the position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days and then close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
