About this position
University of Exeter is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow in evolutionary modelling, social evolution, learning, and social structure at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation on the Penryn Campus, United Kingdom.
The project is part of a NERC-funded grant, “The co-evolution of learning and social structure: how minds shape societies and societies shape minds”, and focuses on the theoretical side of the work. The successful candidate will develop evolutionary models, primarily individual-based evolutionary simulations, build simulation code in C++, R, or Python, interpret model outputs, and contribute to publications and presentations. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with empirical researchers studying wild jackdaws and within Thornton’s Wild Cognition Research Group.
Applicants for the PDRA route should have a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or equivalent experience in behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology, theoretical biology, or a related field, together with proven skills in evolutionary modelling, coding, and data analysis. Applicants for the PDRF route should hold a relevant PhD and have a strong publication record, including theoretical evolutionary biology, plus the ability to develop research programmes and secure funding. Strong communication, teamwork, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills are emphasized, and experience with social network analysis and game theory is desirable.
This is a full-time post with a salary of £35,302–£40,704 for PDRA or £44,352 for PDRF, depending on experience. The position runs from 03/05/2027 to 02/05/2029. Closing date is 14 December 2026.
For informal enquiries, contact Dr Bram Kuijper ([email protected]) or Prof Alex Thornton ([email protected]).
