About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Aquaculture AI, Fish Welfare, and Computer Vision at the University of Stirling

The University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for the Innovate UK AgriScale-funded project AI Camera Analytics for Behaviour, Welfare and Harvest Management in Aquaculture. The role sits at the intersection of aquaculture, fish welfare, animal behaviour, computer vision, and machine learning, with a strong applied focus on commercial field trials and technology translation.

The project will validate a novel batch electrical stunner for Pacific whiteleg shrimp, rainbow trout, and carp, while developing camera-derived welfare indicators of insensibility for use in commercial settings. A linked biomass-camera study in farmed Atlantic salmon will test underwater camera configurations for AI detection of sea lice, wounds, and individual fish identification via skin/spot patterns.

The postholder will lead behavioural welfare indicator development from video footage, coordinate laboratory recording and annotation campaigns, and work closely with Ace Aquatec’s engineering team to specify, train, and evaluate AI/computer vision models. The role also includes field deployments with UK aquaculture producers and support for salmon camera-testing work.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in a relevant discipline is essential, together with experience in fish welfare and behaviour, video/image analysis, AI/computer vision tools, R or Python, and laboratory-based animal behaviour studies. Strong writing skills, time management, and a UK compatible driving licence are required. Prior postdoctoral experience, fish tracking systems, machine learning, commercial aquaculture field data collection, and electrical stunning/slaughter welfare experience are desirable.

Funding and terms: full-time, fixed-term post until 30 September 2027, Grade 7 salary £38,784–£46,049 p.a. The post is based at the University of Stirling and work is expected to be undertaken in the UK. Sponsorship is not available; applicants must already have the right to work in the UK.

Deadline: applications close at midnight on Sunday 18 October 2026, with interviews expected during the week commencing 26 October 2026.
