About this position

Tampere University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioinformatics and AI-Assisted Evidence Synthesis to join the newly established Mechanistic and Applied Toxicology (MAT) group at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The position is centered on the EIRIS project, which studies how environmental chemicals may disrupt endocrine mechanisms and contribute to endometriosis. The project combines biomedical evidence synthesis, computational toxicology, systems biology, and data science to build structured evidence resources and predictive models that support non-animal chemical safety assessment and women’s health research.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in computational work within the MAT group. The role includes developing transparent and reproducible workflows for AI-assisted text mining, information extraction, and evidence structuring; contributing to biocuration and ontology-aware data integration; and analyzing high-dimensional biomedical datasets such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and secretomics. The position also involves pathway, network, graph-based, and mechanistic modeling, including work on Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) and quantitative AOP approaches.

MAT is led by Dr Alexandra Schaffert and works at the interface of in vitro molecular biology, mass-spectrometry-based proteomics, bioinformatics, evidence synthesis, and computational modeling. The group aims to translate mechanistic discoveries into tools that inform regulatory decisions, chemical safety assessment, and next-generation risk assessment (NAMs). The environment is highly interdisciplinary and offers access to high-performance computing, bioinformatics and mass spectrometry core facilities, in vitro infrastructure, and structured postdoctoral support.

The position is full-time and fixed-term for 2 years, with a possibility of extension. A typical starting salary is approximately 3800–4000 EUR per month, plus performance-based salary under the Finnish University Salary System. The workplace is located at Kauppi Campus, Tampere University, Finland. The starting date is preferably as soon as possible, but no later than January 2026, or as mutually agreed.

Applicants should have, or be about to complete, a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, data science, statistics, systems biology, or a related field. Strong Python and/or R skills are required, along with experience building documented and reusable computational workflows. Experience with omics data analysis and NLP/LLM-based information extraction is essential, while network analysis, knowledge representation, ontologies, and mechanistic or causal modeling are advantageous. Excellent English scientific writing and communication skills are required.

A doctoral degree, completed or to be completed before the start of employment, in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, data science, statistics, systems biology, or another relevant discipline; strong programming skills in Python and/or R; demonstrated experience developing data-analysis pipelines, software tools, workflows or computational resources that are documented and usable by others; substantial experience in the analysis of high-dimensional omics (transcriptomics, proteomics), or comparable large, heterogeneous biomedical data; substantial experience in natural language processing, large language models, information extraction, or text mining; advantage given for network analysis, graph methods, knowledge representation or ontologies, and mechanistic, causal or dynamic modelling of biological systems; ability to work independently, select and justify methods, communicate uncertainty, and take responsibility for a research workstream; excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English (minimum level C1).
