About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, working in the Global Systems Institute on ESA-funded research projects focused on Earth observation, climate science, and Earth system tipping points.
The role is split across two projects: PREDICT (80%) and EO4TIPP (20%). On PREDICT, the fellow will study early warning signals for terrestrial tipping points, including Amazon rainforest dieback and dryland vegetation collapse, using Earth observation datasets and CMIP6 climate model output. The work involves developing and testing statistical and machine-learning approaches to detect precursors of abrupt change, alongside project management and reporting.
On EO4TIPP, the fellow will help evaluate the Earth observation architecture for monitoring Earth system tipping points, with a focus on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This includes scientific process understanding of AMOC tipping dynamics, identifying key geophysical variables and their observability via remote sensing, and supporting community consultation activities such as expert surveys and workshops.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant PhD in climate science, Earth system science, environmental physics, or a related field; experience with Earth observation data and climate model output; familiarity with early warning signal detection methods; and the ability to work collaboratively across an international, multi-partner research environment.
Funding and duration: ESA-funded, full-time, fixed-term post available from 1 October 2026 until 13 January 2028.
Deadline: 14 October 2026.
How to apply: Review the Job Description and Person Specification, then submit an application through the jobs.ac.uk link. For questions, contact Dr Jesse Abrams at [email protected].
Funding details
ESA-funded full-time postdoctoral research fellowship on a fixed-term basis until 13 January 2028. The post is available from 1 October 2026.
What's required
A relevant PhD in climate science, Earth system science, environmental physics, or a related field is required. Applicants should have demonstrable experience with Earth observation data and climate model output, ideally including CMIP6, and experience with or strong interest in early warning signal detection methods for complex systems such as critical slowing down and statistical precursor analysis. Familiarity with terrestrial tipping systems and/or AMOC or wider climate tipping point literature is desirable. Project management and reporting experience are also desirable, along with the ability to work collaboratively in an international, multi-partner environment and manage work across two concurrent projects.
How to apply
Read the Job Description and Person Specification, then apply via the jobs.ac.uk application page. Contact Dr Jesse Abrams for further information if needed.
