About this position
The University of Michigan School of Kinesiology is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for an international project on longitudinal child development and health.
The fellowship focuses on the relationships among motor development, health-related fitness, mental health, and child development across childhood, using a unique cohort dataset with eight annual waves from approximately ages 5–6 to 11–12. A major theme is understanding the developmental consequences of persistent motor difficulties, including developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and how these relate to physical fitness, physical and mental health, and developmental trajectories over time.
This is a strong opportunity for a quantitatively skilled early-career researcher interested in longitudinal data analysis, mixed-effects/multilevel models, latent growth models, time-lagged models, and related approaches. The fellow will lead secondary analyses, manuscript preparation, and publication from a defined set of priority questions, while also having room to develop investigator-led analyses using the dataset.
Required background includes a completed or nearly completed PhD or equivalent doctorate in a relevant field such as kinesiology, human movement, exercise science, child development, developmental psychology, epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or quantitative methods. Applicants should have strong quantitative skills, experience with complex datasets, and excellent scientific writing ability. Experience in child development, motor development, physical activity, or child mental health is advantageous.
The position is based at the Ann Arbor Campus with hybrid work possible. Remote work from outside the United States is not available. The posting indicates a review process that may begin after the minimum posting period, and the job opening is listed with a posting window of 2026-10-21 to 2026-11-20.
To apply, submit a single PDF through the University of Michigan applicant management system containing a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three professional references. Questions may be directed to Dean John Cairney at [email protected].
