About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Physics-Adapted Numerical Methods at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Norway).
This 3-year postdoctoral position is based in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and is part of the project Physics-Adapted Numerical Methods for Two-Phase Flow (PANum), funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is a collaboration between Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and Hasselt University in Belgium.
The research focuses on numerical methods, numerical analysis, ODEs and PDEs, applied mathematics, simulation science, and scientific programming. The goal is to develop robust, efficient, low-error mathematical methods that preserve important physical properties in numerical solutions, with applications such as CO2 storage and fuel cells. The successful candidate will develop, analyze, and implement methods in an open-source framework.
The position is embedded in the Engineering Computing research group at HVL and the computational mathematics group (CMAT) at Hasselt University. The postdoc will work closely with Professor Carina Bringedal, Associate Professor Therese B. Sjursen, and Jochen Schütz, alongside current PhD and master’s students connected to PANum.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in computer science, simulation science, applied mathematics, or a closely related field, or have submitted the thesis before the deadline; the PhD must be awarded within 4 weeks after the deadline. A strong background in numerical analysis for ODEs/PDEs and programming in Python, MATLAB, C++, Julia, or similar is required. Experience with git, collaborative code development, and asymptotic methods is an advantage. Good English communication skills are expected.
Funding and benefits: the position is paid according to Norwegian government salary regulations (position code 1352) and includes annual work expense funding for conferences, research visits, and equipment. A 2% pension deduction applies.
Application window: deadline is 2026-10-23. Apply online through Jobbnorge and upload the requested documents, including a cover letter, CV, thesis, transcripts/diplomas, selected publications, and references. Certified translations and HK-dir recognition documentation may be required for non-English/non-Scandinavian documents.

What's required
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in computer science, simulation science, applied mathematics or a closely related field, or have submitted the PhD thesis before the application deadline, with the PhD awarded within 4 weeks after the deadline. The scientific profile must be within numerical methods for ODEs and PDEs. A solid background is required in numerical analysis for ODEs and PDEs and scientific programming using Python, MATLAB, C++, Julia, or similar. Experience with collaborative code development and version control tools like git, and with asymptotic methods such as two-scale or matched asymptotic expansions for PDEs, is an advantage. Good oral and written English skills are required, and candidates are evaluated on thesis/publication quality, ability to work across theoretical and applied research, collaboration, research leadership potential, and communication skills.
How to apply
Apply online via the Jobbnorge portal using the “Apply for this job” link. Upload a cover letter, CV, PhD thesis, transcripts and diplomas, up to 5 publications, and contact details for 2 references. If your documents are not in English or a Scandinavian language, include certified translations and a recognition document from HK-dir if applicable.
