About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Protein Engineering for Biocatalysis at The University of Queensland (School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, St Lucia Campus, Brisbane, Australia).

This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral role focused on protein engineering, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, and pharmaceutical chemistry. The project aims to develop biological catalysts for fluorination chemistry using robust enzymes created by ancestral sequence reconstruction, supporting cleaner and more sustainable drug development.

The successful candidate will join a globally connected research environment and contribute to high-quality research, publications, funding applications, knowledge transfer, industry engagement, and possible commercialisation of UQ intellectual property. The role also includes supervision of undergraduate, Honours, and HDR students, plus laboratory stewardship and compliance responsibilities.

Eligibility highlights: completion or near completion of a PhD in protein engineering, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, structural biology, or related chemistry fields; strong undergraduate achievement in biological or inorganic chemistry; evidence of publications and conference presentations; experience supervising junior students; and hands-on experience engineering, purifying, and characterizing enzymes for biocatalysis or pharmaceutical chemistry. Experience with cytochrome P450 enzymes, unspecific peroxygenases, or other haemoproteins is desirable.

Funding and conditions: base salary AUD 85,000–133,000 per year plus 17% superannuation and leave loading. The appointment runs until September 2028. Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia; employer-sponsored work rights are not available.

What's required

Completion or near completion of a PhD in protein engineering, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, structural biology, or biological, bioinorganic or medicinal chemistry. Evidence of excellent undergraduate achievement in biological or inorganic chemistry. An emerging research profile with publications in reputable refereed journals and presentations at international and national conferences. Experience supervising junior research students on laboratory-based projects and contributing to laboratory management and compliance. Essential experience in engineering, purifying and characterizing enzymes for biocatalysis or pharmaceutical chemistry; desirable experience with cytochrome P450 enzymes, unspecific peroxygenases, or other haemoproteins using spectroscopic and biophysical approaches. Must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of the appointment.
