About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Soil Security for Cotton Farming Systems at the University of Sydney, based in Narrabri, New South Wales, Australia.
This is a full-time fixed-term postdoctoral role for 3 years, with the possibility of extension, focused on the Capturing Value from Soil Security project within a strategic partnership between the University of Sydney and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC).
The project sits at the intersection of soil science, pedology, agricultural science, environmental science, agronomy, geospatial science, GIS, digital soil mapping, and spatial statistics. The successful candidate will develop and apply a regionally relevant Soil Security assessment framework for Australian cotton farming systems, including soil-landscape analysis, field sampling, laboratory characterization, and mapping products.
Key responsibilities include conducting research aligned with project milestones and CRDC reporting; building baseline assessments using pedogenons, genosoils and phenosoils; identifying soil functions, ecosystem services and threats; designing stratified multi-site soil-sampling programs; coordinating field logistics and QA/QC; and collaborating with growers, consultants, policymakers, and research partners through workshops, interviews, field days and knowledge-exchange activities.
The role also includes mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students and occasional undergraduate teaching where allocated.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD by commencement in soil science, pedology, agricultural or environmental science, agronomy, pedometrics, geospatial science or a closely related field; experience with quantitative soil assessment and soil field/lab data; strong GIS and reproducible coding skills in R or Python; a publication record appropriate to career stage; and strong communication and teamwork skills. Experience with surveys, human research ethics, and research-data governance is also valued.
Funding: Academic Level B salary of AUD 132,533–157,381 plus 17% superannuation.
Location: Narrabri, NSW, Australia.
Deadline: Applications close Friday 23 October 2026 at 11:59 PM.
