About this position

Tokyo Metropolitan University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in theoretical gravitational physics within the Graduate School of Science, Department of Physics.

The position is supported by the KAKENHI Challenging Research project “Foundations of Non-Hermitian Gravitational Physics and Exploration of Black Hole Gravitational Waves” (April 2026–March 2029), led by Prof. Hayato Motohashi. The project aims to build a new interdisciplinary area connecting non-Hermitian physics with black-hole gravitational-wave research.

Possible research topics include black-hole perturbation theory, quasinormal modes, exceptional points, avoided crossings, resonant excitation, ringdown gravitational waves, and black-hole spectroscopy.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD/doctorate or be expected to obtain one by the start date, and should be highly motivated to work in the listed research areas.

Funding: annual salary is 4–6 million yen. Transportation expenses are available, but no housing allowance, relocation allowance, or other extra allowances are provided.

Location: Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan.

Deadline: applications must be received by 2026-08-25 at 1:00 p.m. The appointment is expected to start on November 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to apply: submit the required materials via AcademicJobsOnline. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, publication list, summary of previous research, research statement, and two reference letters submitted online by referees.
