About this position

ARDITI (Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação, Tecnologia e Inovação) is offering 1 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship under the Madeira Scientific Expeditions 2026–2027, focused on marine sciences, marine biology, and marine ecology. The position is based in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, and is designed for a researcher who can contribute to the coordination and scientific follow-up of major ocean expeditions.

The fellow will support the operational and logistical coordination of the Madeira 2026 Expedition and the Selvagens 2027 Expedition, including stakeholder engagement, collaboration with local fishers, field data collection, ecological information gathering, and environmental monitoring and fisheries assessment activities. The role also includes data management, pre-processing and analysis, report drafting, content compilation, and support for expedition-related events, meetings, and workshops.

This is a full-time postdoctoral fellowship (24 months initially, with possible renewal up to a maximum of 3 years). The expected start date is 1 September 2026. The fellowship is funded through the Madeira Scientific Expeditions 2026–2027 project, in partnership with the Oceano Azul Foundation. The monthly maintenance stipend is €1,901 tax-exempt, and fellows also benefit from personal accident insurance related to research activities.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree obtained within the three years before the closing date. If the degree was awarded abroad, it must be properly recognized in Portugal. The call is open to Portuguese citizens, EU citizens, third-country nationals, stateless persons, and political refugees. Preferred experience includes marine fieldwork, scientific coordination, data organization, technical reporting, communication in Portuguese and English, marine conservation, Marine Protected Areas, and engagement with communities and fisheries stakeholders.

Applications must be submitted by email by 11 August 2026. Candidates should send the required documents: certificate or diploma, updated CV in English, and a motivation letter explaining eligibility, research skills, and interests.
