About this position

The University of Coimbra is inviting applications for one postdoctoral research grant under the REGENERAR project, Improving the Effectiveness and Safety of Epigenetic Editing in Brain Regeneration (GA n.° 101129812). The position is based at UC-Biotech in Cantanhede, Portugal, within a collaborative European consortium that includes academic, research, SME, and industry partners. The project is funded by the European Union through Horizon Europe / EIC.

The selected researcher will contribute to the evaluation of a formulation developed within the project, using gene-editing processes in cellular and in vivo models. The broader objective is to develop a non-viral delivery formulation up to TRL 4 for gene-editing applications aimed at inducing regeneration in tissues with limited self-repair capacity. The post is highly relevant for researchers working at the interface of biological sciences, pharmacological sciences, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and related translational fields.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biological Engineering, or a related area. The doctoral degree must have been awarded within the last three years, and the PhD research must have been carried out at a host institution different from the one hosting this grant. The notice also specifies that candidates cannot exceed a cumulative total of three years in this type of grant. The evaluation will consider academic record and interview performance, with particular attention to experience in cell culture, cell characterization (including immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, and RNA-ISH), and nanotechnology.

The grant is offered for an initial duration of 6 months, with a possibility of renewal. The monthly grant amount is 1901.00 EUR, and the award includes voluntary social security coverage if opted for, as well as mandatory personal accident insurance. The project is funded under Grant Agreement 101129812, and beneficiaries must acknowledge EU support in all outputs and publications arising from the grant.

Applications must be submitted electronically via Apply UC at https://apply.uc.pt/. Mandatory documents include an updated, dated, signed CV and a copy of academic degree certificates. Candidates with foreign degrees must provide recognition proof or evidence that it has been requested by the end of the application period. A motivation letter, references, and any other relevant documents may also be attached. The application window runs until 2026-11-12.

The PhD must have been obtained within the three years prior to the grant start date, and the doctoral research must have been carried out at a host institution different from the institution where the grant will be hosted. Candidates are not eligible if the award would cause them to exceed a cumulative total of three years in this type of grant, if their PhD was obtained more than three years before the application date, or if most of the PhD research was conducted at the host institution. The call is open to Portuguese, EU, third-country, stateless, and refugee-status candidates. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge in cell culture, cell characterization (including immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, RNA-ISH), and nanotechnology. Application documents must be submitted in Portuguese and/or English.
