About this position

A postdoctoral position is available at the University of the Balearic Islands (Universitat de les Illes Balears, UIB) in Palma, Spain, within the research group of Dr. Gian Luca Giorgi.

The project focuses on thermodynamic resources for quantum reservoir computing, with emphasis on open quantum systems, driven-dissipative dynamics, and the energetic and informational costs of quantum information processing. The successful candidate will contribute to theoretical work on quantum reservoir computing (QRC), including the analysis of dissipation, entropy production, and trade-offs between computation and thermodynamic performance in driven-dissipative quantum platforms.

Specific topics include characterising energetic and entropic costs of information processing, connecting Liouvillian spectral properties such as metastability and spectral gaps to thermodynamic metrics, and investigating monitoring and measurement back-action in quantum reservoir thermodynamics. The position builds on the group’s work on monitored quantum reservoir computing and related quantum machine learning directions.

This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral appointment with a planned start date of 16 November 2026 and an application deadline of 5 October 2026 at 23:55 (Europe/Madrid). The gross monthly salary is €3,200, with public social security coverage, and additional compensation may be possible depending on recognised professional experience.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics or a related area and have strong skills in numerical simulation, such as Python, as well as experience with analytical methods in quantum neuromorphic computing and quantum thermodynamics. Prior experience in complex quantum systems and quantum machine learning is expected, and English proficiency is an advantage. Non-EU degree holders selected for appointment must provide proof of degree equivalence or evidence that equivalence has been requested.

Applications should be submitted via the University of the Balearic Islands recruitment portal. Further job details are available on the university’s research recruitment website.

What's required

A PhD in Physics or related areas is required. The candidate should have a solid command of numerical simulation, for example Python, and experience in analytical methods applied to quantum neuromorphic computing and quantum thermodynamics. Experience in complex quantum systems, quantum thermodynamics, and quantum machine learning is required. English language skills would be a plus. For candidates with a non-EU degree, proof of equivalence to a European qualification or proof of having applied for equivalence is required if selected.

How to apply

Apply through the PPI application website. Use the official application link and follow the instructions on the University of the Balearic Islands recruitment portal. Ensure any required degree equivalence documents are ready if you hold a non-EU qualification.
