About this position

Postdoctoral Research Scientist opportunity in mitochondrial biology at the CRUK Scotland Institute in Glasgow. The post sits within the ARIA-funded Precision Mitochondria programme and the CONTROL-MITO team, which is developing a chemical-genetic toolkit to switch specific mitochondrial proteins on and off using small molecules. The project focuses on engineered mitochondrial DNA expression, maintenance, and transfer in vivo, with a strong emphasis on mitochondrial phenotyping in bioengineered human cell lines.

The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment alongside collaborators from the University of Edinburgh, University of Dundee, and University of Glasgow. Day-to-day research will include measuring mitochondrial bioenergetics and metabolism by respirometry and LC-MS, investigating mitochondrial morphology, function, and quality control using fluorescence confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and proteomic analysis, and monitoring mitochondrial genome maintenance and expression. The role also involves collaboration with core facilities in metabolomics, advanced imaging, and proteomics, plus presenting results at consortium and ARIA meetings and contributing to publications.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in mitochondrial/cell biology or a closely related discipline; hands-on mammalian cell culture experience; ability to work independently and manage experimental workflows; strong communication and teamwork skills. Desirable experience includes chemical genetic tools, mitochondrial gene maintenance/expression assays, mitophagy and stress-response assays, and metabolomics/stable isotope tracing.

Funding and contract: Salary £39,253–£45,505 depending on experience, with relocation allowance and visa costs if required. Fixed-term contract up to 6 years, subject to successful review at Year 3.

Application: Apply through the jobs.ac.uk “Apply” button. Informal enquiries: [email protected]. Closing date: 20 November 2026.

What's required

A PhD in mitochondrial biology, cell biology, or a closely related discipline is required. Applicants should have hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, be able to work independently and manage experimental workflows, and demonstrate an open, rigorous, reproducible approach to science. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential. Desirable experience includes chemical genetic tools such as degron tags or chemically induced proximity systems, quantifying mitochondrial gene maintenance and expression, mitochondrial quality control assays including mitophagy reporters and the mitochondrial stress response, and mass spectrometry metabolomics or stable isotope tracing.
