About this position
Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI) at the University of Utah is hiring for two related opportunities focused on AI model discovery, scholarly knowledge extraction, and research software engineering for the National Data Platform (NDP).
Openings: a postdoctoral researcher and a PhD student / graduate research assistant in AI research.
Research area: the project develops AI-ready and agentic infrastructure for discovering and analyzing AI models used in scientific research publications. The work includes natural language processing, publication mining, metadata extraction, model identification, search and retrieval, data infrastructure, software engineering, and human-centered discovery systems.
What you would work on: identifying AI models mentioned in papers; linking model families, versions, checkpoints, and architectures; tracking tasks and scientific domains; extracting evidence of reuse, benchmarking, fine-tuning, and comparison; and building interfaces for search, ranking, and visualization. The role also includes APIs, web front-end development, backend systems, containerization, CI/CD, deployment, maintenance, and optimization.
Institution and environment: SCI is a world-class research institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The team is multidisciplinary and collaborative, with faculty, software engineers, PhD students, and postdocs working together on scientific computing and data systems.
Funding: the postdoctoral position lists a salary range of $60,000 to $70,000 per year and is a full-time benefited staff role. The graduate research assistant role is a 20-hour/week position and is tied to the University of Utah Tuition Benefit Program.
Eligibility highlights: the postdoc prefers a PhD in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Data Science, Informatics, AI/ML, or a closely related field, plus experience with web technologies, databases, Docker, Linux, CI/CD, and related software engineering skills. The graduate assistant role requires current University of Utah graduate student status supported by the Tuition Benefit Program.
Deadline: the posting close date is 2026-09-24.
How to apply: use the University of Utah PeopleAdmin posting for the postdoctoral role and the linked graduate assistant posting for the PhD student role. Contact Jess Tate at [email protected] for further information.
