About this position

University College Cork is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for APC Microbiome Ireland, a leading centre for gut microbiota research based in Cork, Ireland. The appointment is an 11-month fixed-term, full-time post within a multidisciplinary research environment focused on how the intestinal microbiota and its metabolic activity shape immune function and recovery from infectious disease.

The project, titled Immune Health, is centred on understanding how viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2 can lead to long-term debilitating symptoms and how microbe-immune interactions may contribute to disease recovery. The successful candidate will join a team at APC Microbiome Ireland, which brings together clinicians, clinician-scientists, and basic scientists and has established an international reputation through extensive peer-reviewed publications and landmark discoveries.

The ideal applicant is an enthusiastic immunologist with experience in murine models of infection and/or murine models of allergy, particularly gnotobiotic models. Experience examining mucosal lymphocyte polarisation in response to bacterial-derived metabolites will be an advantage and is explicitly prioritised in the advert. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in biological sciences and have 1-4 years of research experience.

The position is hosted by University College Cork in Ireland. The post offers a salary on the IUA PD Scale of €47,273 - €53,925 per annum. UCC notes that it is an accredited research organisation able to host third-country and non-EEA nationals for research purposes.

Applications must be submitted online via the UCC vacancy portal. The deadline is 12 noon (Irish local time) on 21 August 2026, and late applications will not be accepted. Informal enquiries may be directed to Prof. Liam O’Mahony at [email protected].
