Postdoctoral Researcher / Assistant Professor opportunity at Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland
This full-time postdoctoral position is part of the NCN Sonata 21 research project Networks of Book Circulation and the Making of Reading Communities in Late Antiquity, led by Dr Marta Szada. The project investigates source materials from the eastern Mediterranean region dating to AD 400–600, with a focus on how books circulated and how reading communities were formed in Late Antiquity.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator on research, interpretation, and scholarly outputs. The project combines traditional philological and historical inquiry with digital humanities approaches. In the first phase, it aims to build a structured research data model and knowledge base linking people, places, texts, institutions, and events. In the later phase, the project will develop datasets and analyse their structure using network analysis methods.
The post is hosted by the Faculty of Humanities at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. It is a temporary, full-time position (40 hours per week) for 36 months, with a planned start date in November 2026. The salary is approximately 9,500 PLN gross per month. The appointment is contingent on the National Science Centre finalising project funding with the university.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in the humanities awarded no more than 12 years before employment, have research experience in Ancient Greek literature, Byzantine literature, Ancient Greek history, the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantium, and be able to read Ancient Greek independently. A strong publication record, international research experience, and excellent English are required. Latin and additional languages are desirable, and prior experience with digital humanities is an advantage.

Excellent command of Ancient Greek is required for independent reading of primary sources, along with a current record of scholarly achievements including publications, especially in peer-reviewed international journals or publishing houses. Candidates should demonstrate international research activity through conferences, research stays, fellowships, international projects, or co-authored publications. Good spoken and written English is required, as interviews will be conducted entirely in English. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of Latin sufficient for primary sources, knowledge of another foreign language, and experience in digital humanities methods.
