About this position

Postdoctoral researcher associate opportunity at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. in Trieste, Italy, within the Structural Biology Laboratory and the new cryo-EM facility and preparation laboratory developed in the CERIC-ERIC context. The position is tied to the “CERIC Membership Fees project WP3” and supports the strengthening of sample-preparation workflows for cryo-EM single-particle analysis, macromolecular crystallography, and integrative structural biology.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary environment connecting the cryo-EM facility, the µXRD/MX beamline, the SAXS beamline, and associated laboratories. Core duties include recombinant protein expression and purification, protein-complex preparation, biophysical characterization, crystallization and crystal optimization, cryo-EM grid preparation, and support for the installation and operation of the new prep room for cryo-EM vitrification. The role also includes close collaboration with beamline scientists and facility staff on data-collection workflows and complementary methods such as SAXS, NMR, and other structural techniques.

This post is particularly suited to candidates with a strong background in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or related life-science fields, and practical experience in protein production, sample quality assessment, and structural biology sample-preparation methods. Experience with MX and/or cryo-EM data collection and analysis is an advantage. Excellent English communication skills, autonomy, and the ability to work in a user-support and infrastructure environment are emphasized.

The appointment is a full-time fixed-term contract initially for 12 months, with a gross annual salary between €30,814.29 and €32,500.00 depending on experience and qualifications. Additional benefits include accident insurance outside the workplace, supplementary medical insurance, lunch vouchers, and paid holiday periods of approximately five weeks per year. Applications close on 6 September 2026 at 23:00 (Europe/Rome).
