About this position
imec is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for a project on Biologically Inspired Motion Systems for Robotics in Leuven, Belgium. The work focuses on developing a new class of electrochemical actuators designed to overcome limitations of conventional electromagnetic motors, especially where compactness, softness, silent operation, miniaturization, and biological compatibility are important.
The position sits at the intersection of robotics, mechatronics, microfabrication, and nanotechnology. The successful candidate will carry out hands-on research in the early phase of the project, including experiment design, device fabrication and characterization, proof-of-concept development, and validation of key hypotheses. The role also includes project definition, planning, execution, reporting, presenting results to internal stakeholders and external partners, contributing to scientific publications and technical documentation, and supporting communication across sites and research groups.
The research environment is imec’s headquarters in Leuven, one of the world’s leading nanotechnology research centers. The posting emphasizes an inclusive, multicultural, and informal workplace with opportunities to take initiative and grow professionally. imec also highlights access to imec.academy for technical and personal development, along with a market-appropriate salary and fringe benefits.
Eligibility is aimed at candidates with a doctoral degree in robotics, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline. Strong practical skills in MATLAB or Python and CAE tools such as COMSOL are expected, while MEMS design and microfabrication experience are considered advantageous. The role also values experience supervising master’s and/or PhD students, strong analytical and organizational abilities, excellent communication, teamwork in multidisciplinary settings, and fluency in English.
This is a postdoctoral opening rather than a PhD or master’s studentship. The post was published on 2026-06-23 and no deadline was specified in the listing. Interested applicants should use the official imec application link to submit their materials and consult the employer page for any updated instructions.
