About this position
University of Twente is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) mission, a European Space Agency satellite mission scheduled for launch in September 2026.
The project focuses on incoming mission data and vegetation fluorescence products that help reveal photosynthetic activity, plant health, stress, and the functioning of the global carbon cycle. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with a multidisciplinary team at the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), supporting the quality assurance and validation of satellite data products for vegetation structure and photosynthesis.
Main tasks include monitoring automated quality control of data products, carrying out additional tests after measurements, reporting quality issues, and proposing improvements. The role also involves adapting existing quality control algorithms, developing new validation methods, participating in online meetings with mission scientists and technicians, and supporting field-data validation teams through algorithms and Jupyter notebooks. The successful candidate will also contribute to scientific publications.
The position is especially suited to candidates with a PhD in physics, environmental science, remote sensing, or a closely related field. Strong Python programming skills are required, together with familiarity with satellite data or other large numeric data files. Knowledge of physics or biophysics and statistics is also expected, along with excellent English communication and writing skills.
The appointment is full-time for one year. The offer includes a gross monthly salary of €4,075 to €5,538 depending on experience and qualifications, plus an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus, pension coverage, support for applying for the 30% ruling, and access to excellent research facilities and campus sports amenities.
Applications must be submitted before 10 August 2026. Candidates should provide a motivation letter, CV with course list and grades, contact details for at least two references, and MSc/PhD diplomas and transcripts. If the PhD is not yet fully completed, a letter from the PhD supervisor confirming near completion is acceptable.
For informal enquiries, contact Christiaan van der Tol at [email protected].
