About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher (F/M) at the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, within the Solar System Physics and Astrophysics Division.

This position is part of the research project The Subparsec Structure of the Local Interstellar Medium, funded by the Polish National Science Center (NCN). The successful candidate will join a project led by dr hab. Paweł Swaczyna and will contribute to research on the local interstellar medium, space physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and related plasma/continuum-mechanics aspects of the project.

Core duties include conducting scientific research aligned with the project tasks, developing research methods and software for analysing and modelling observations from space missions, publishing results in international scientific journals, and presenting findings at international conferences. The role is full-time and based in Warsaw, with stationary work as the default arrangement.

The gross salary is 13,263 PLN per month. The initial contract is for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to a total of 48 months depending on satisfactory research progress. The application deadline is 17 October 2026, and the start date is planned for 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, to be negotiated with the selected candidate.

Applicants should hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related discipline, and should have research experience in a relevant field. Strong English skills are required, demonstrated by scientific publications and conference presentations. Candidates should also be proficient in at least one of Python, C/C++, or Mathematica, and be able to write papers, review literature critically, develop new concepts, and work effectively in a team.

PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related discipline; research experience in space physics, astronomy, astrophysics, plasma physics, continuum mechanics, or another related field; good command of written and spoken English evidenced by publications and conference presentations; very good proficiency in at least one of Python, C/C++, or Mathematica; ability to write scientific papers and prepare conference presentations; ability to conduct thorough and critical reviews of scientific literature; ability to develop and apply new concepts; creative problem-solving; ability to work effectively in a team. The competition is open to persons meeting the conditions specified in the Act of 30 April 2010 on the Polish Academy of Sciences. PhD must have been awarded in the year of employment or within 12 years before 1 January of that year, subject to allowable career-break extensions; the PhD must be from another institution than CBK PAN or the candidate must have completed at least 10 months of continuous evidenced postdoctoral fellowship in another institution and in another country than the PhD-awarding country.
