About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in 2D material nanocomposites for tunable photonics at Aalto University (School of Science, Department of Applied Physics, Multifunctional Nanocomposite group).

This postdoctoral opening focuses on 2D materials, nanocomposites, MXenes, functional organic molecules, and tunable photonics. The project aims to develop a new optically active materials platform and demonstrate prototype devices with large modulation amplitudes or fast switching speeds. The work is highly interdisciplinary and combines materials synthesis, thin-film processing, device fabrication, and advanced characterization.

Research tasks include laboratory experiments on 2D material nanocomposite synthesis, thin-film electrochemical and FET device fabrication and characterization, scientific writing, conference presentations, and research visits with European partner universities and facilities. The position is embedded in Aalto’s research environment and connects with LIBER excellent center, PREIN flagship, and international collaborators.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or soon receive a Ph.D. or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Physics. Strong English skills are required; Finnish is not required. Preferred experience includes thin-film device fabrication, wet chemistry synthesis, additive manufacturing/printing/deposition, clean room work, and characterization methods such as TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS, NMR, IR, Raman, XAS, and SAXS. A strong publication record and demonstrated success in related studies are important.

Funding and terms: this is a two-year postdoctoral position with possible extension. Salary starts at about 4130 EUR/month and may rise to 4550 EUR/month depending on experience. Occupational healthcare is included.

Location: Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland.

Deadline: 14 August 2026. Applications may be reviewed during the application period, and the position may be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

How to apply: submit one single PDF in English via Aalto University’s Workday recruitment system using the Apply Now link. Include a motivation letter, CV with publications and two referees, a summary of your Ph.D. thesis and related work, and copies of your Ph.D. degree certificate and transcript.
