About this position
Ghent University in Belgium is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in 4D X-ray CT Imaging and THM Testing of Porous Materials for a two-year, full-time appointment. The position is based mainly at the UGent Geotechnical Institute and connected closely to the Centre for X-ray Tomography at Ghent University (UGCT), with a shared collaborative component with RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
The project focuses on the development and scientific use of a miniature thermo hydro-mechanical (THM) triaxial device designed for in situ 4D X-ray CT imaging of porous materials. The successful candidate will help enable direct observation of microstructural changes, phase transitions, fluid redistribution, cracking, and degradation under controlled thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical conditions.
Initial applications will centre on geomaterials, frozen soils, and climate-sensitive porous materials, with wider relevance to rocks, concrete, wood, asphalt binders, and related systems. The role is highly experimental and interdisciplinary, combining X-ray tomography, advanced laboratory testing, image processing, quantitative analysis, and possibly custom rig development.
The collaboration with RWTH Aachen University offers the opportunity to work with Prof. Florian Fusseis and his group on CT-compatible deformation rigs and operando 4D imaging. This is a strong fit for researchers with a background in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, materials engineering, geosciences, or a related field who want to work at the interface of experimental mechanics, imaging, and porous media research.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent is required; strong experience with X-ray CT and 3D image analysis is expected; programming or scripting skills are important; hands-on experimental capability and excellent English are required. Desirable expertise includes triaxial testing, soil or rock mechanics, frozen soils, temperature-controlled testing, digital volume correlation, pore-network analysis, crack analysis, synchrotron experiments, CAD, instrumentation, and sensor integration.
