About this position

ETH Zurich and Eawag invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the adsorption and environmental fate of water-soluble polymers. The project is hosted by the Environmental Chemistry Group in the Department of Environmental Systems Sciences and is conducted jointly at ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

The research focuses on how synthetic water-soluble and water-dispersible polymers interact with mineral and organic surfaces, soils, sediments, and sludge. Topics include adsorption/desorption, attachment reversibility, polymer conformations on surfaces, transport and retention, and the influence of polymer properties such as functional group chemistry, charge, and molecular weight. The work combines mechanistic environmental chemistry with practical relevance for environmental fate assessment and regulatory approaches.

Depending on expertise and project development, the work may involve batch adsorption and desorption experiments, column transport studies, in situ surface measurements, and high-resolution mass spectrometry to characterize polymer fractions remaining in solution and selective adsorption behavior. The successful candidate will contribute to research design, experimental strategy, publication, presentations, and support for Master’s thesis research.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in surface/interfacial chemistry, colloid science, polymer science, environmental chemistry/sciences, materials science, or a closely related field; strong experimental background is preferred, especially in adsorption, desorption, solid-water interfaces, or related analytical methods; good English skills are required.

Funding and location: the position is funded for up to two years with a competitive postdoctoral salary. The workplace is in Zurich and Dübendorf, Switzerland.

How to apply: submit one PDF via the ETH Zurich or Eawag online application portal. Include a cover letter, CV with publication list, up to three relevant publications, degree certificates and transcripts, and contact details for three references. Applications by email or post are not accepted.

Deadline: applications are reviewed from 26 October 2026 until the position is filled.

What's required

Applicants should hold a PhD in surface or interfacial chemistry, colloid science, polymer science, environmental chemistry or sciences, materials science, or a closely related field. Experimental experience in adsorption, desorption, attachment, or characterization of solid-water interfaces is particularly welcome. Useful additional experience includes surface-sensitive analytical techniques, polymer characterization, batch adsorption experiments, or column transport studies. Good written and spoken English is required. Interest in interdisciplinary work connecting fundamental research with industrial and regulatory questions is welcome.

How to apply

Submit the application online through the ETH Zurich or Eawag application portal using a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV with publication list, up to three relevant publications, degree certificates and transcripts, and contact details for three references. Apply through only one portal and do not use email or postal submission.
