About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher / AI & Scientific Software Engineer position in the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Biotechnology (IBG-1). The role sits at the interface of computer science, machine learning, computer vision, microbiology, microbiome research, microscopy, laboratory automation, and scientific software engineering.
The project focuses on autonomous live-cell microscopy and a high-throughput single-cell analysis platform combining microfluidics, advanced live-cell imaging, and AI-based image analysis. The successful candidate will develop machine-learning workflows for segmentation, species classification, lineage tracking, real-time analysis, adaptive imaging, feedback control, active learning, retraining strategies, and event-driven software for autonomous experiment control.
This is an interdisciplinary postdoctoral role in collaboration with experimental partners at HZI, Helmholtz Munich, and HHU. The post emphasizes scalable, maintainable, open-source software and deployment on cutting-edge experimental platforms with GPU computing infrastructure.
Eligibility highlights: a strong Master’s background in Computer Science, Engineering, Biophysics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology, or a related field; strong Python/PyTorch and scientific computing skills; experience in machine learning for image analysis and computer vision; and a solid mathematical/statistical background. Experience with C++, Linux, HPC, object detection, segmentation, multi-object tracking, time-series analysis, probabilistic modeling, streaming data, or multimodal learning is valued. Excellent English is required; German is helpful but not mandatory.
Funding: fixed-term contract with salary and social benefits under TVöD-Bund, pay group E13, for 39 hours per week.
Location: Jülich, Germany.
Application: apply online through the recruitment portal. The position is advertised until filled, so there is no fixed deadline stated in the post.
