About this position

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position focused on the design and development of atomic layer deposition (ALD) thin film coatings for protective applications in low Earth orbit environments. LIST is a leading Research and Technology Organization (RTO) in Luxembourg, renowned for its work in materials science, environment, and information technology. The institute offers a dynamic, multicultural, and inclusive research environment with state-of-the-art laboratories and a strong commitment to responsible and impactful research.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team to design, deposit, and optimize conformal ALD coatings on satellite-relevant composite and polymer substrates. The research will involve studying the impact of deposition parameters on coating performance, including adhesion, barrier properties, and durability. The role includes performing advanced physicochemical and structural characterization of coatings, evaluating their performance under relevant environmental and degradation conditions, and analyzing experimental results to establish structure–property relationships. Collaboration with project partners in a defense and space R&D framework is expected, and contributions to publications, reports, and project dissemination are encouraged.

This position is funded by the European Defence Agency and is open exclusively to nationals of European Union Member States, in accordance with Luxembourg Labour Code and EDA requirements. The contract is for 24 months and includes a 13-month salary, statutory health insurance, 32 days of paid annual leave, 11 public holidays, flexible working hours, a home working policy, and digital lunch vouchers. LIST provides a supportive environment with personalized learning programs, innovative infrastructures, and a strong emphasis on diversity and gender equality.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Surface Engineering, Nanotechnology, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include a strong background in thin films, surface modification, or functional coatings, hands-on research experience in thin film deposition and surface engineering, and fluency in English. Experience with atomic layer deposition (ALD), vacuum-based deposition techniques, and materials characterization is highly desirable. Additional experience in coating development for advanced materials, polymers, composites, or barrier applications, as well as previous work with space-related materials or protective coatings, will be considered assets.

To apply, candidates must submit a motivation letter, a scientific CV with contact details, a list of publications (and patents if applicable), and contact details of two references via the online HR system. Applications by email will not be considered. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled. LIST is committed to equal opportunity and diversity in its workforce.
