About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Amorphous Optical Coatings at Kennesaw State University

This postdoctoral opening is at Kennesaw State University in Marietta, Georgia, United States. The project focuses on the development and fundamental understanding of low-thermal-noise and low-optical-absorption amorphous thin-film coatings for Cosmic Explorer and other current/future gravitational-wave detectors.

The researcher will work on atomistic simulations and computational materials modeling of amorphous optical-coating materials using methods such as density-functional theory, ab initio and classical molecular dynamics, and related techniques. The role also includes analysis of experimental structural data from amorphous thin films, including X-ray total scattering, pair-distribution-function (PDF) analysis, and related diffraction/scattering measurements, with integration of computational and experimental results.

Additional work includes studying relationships among atomic structure, defects, thermal processing, optical properties, and mechanical loss in candidate mirror-coating materials, plus development of scientific programming, data-analysis workflows, and use of high-performance computing resources.

Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate is required, or the doctorate must be completed within six months of hire. Preferred preparation includes physics, materials science, applied physics, chemistry, or a closely related field. Experience with amorphous/disordered materials, thin films, optical materials, atomistic modeling, Python, Linux/HPC, and scattering/diffraction or PDF analysis is desirable. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Funding: this is a limited-term postdoctoral staff position supported by contingent funding currently secured through December 31, 2027. No stipend amount is listed.

How to apply: submit the application through the KSU careers portal using the provided job link. Professional references are required, and selected candidates may need to complete background screening and other institutional checks.
