The project examines the steep decline in Anglophone language-learning by comparing language-learning cultures across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Ireland. The successful candidate will work across four work packages, contributing to comparative policy analysis, mixed-methods data collection and analysis, partnership-building with schools and project stakeholders, and the preparation of scholarly outputs and policy-oriented reports.

Research focus: applied linguistics, language education policy, language learning motivation, language attitudes/ideologies, digital language-learning tools, mixed methods, corpus/discourse analysis, and quantitative/qualitative research.

Eligibility highlights: PhD submitted or awarded in education, applied linguistics, or a cognate discipline; alternatively, relevant master’s/degree background is noted in the advert. Strong experience in research methods, statistical analysis, and publication is expected. Desirable experience includes R/SPSS/Stata/SAS/Python, AI systems, policy engagement, public communication, and knowledge of Gaelic/Irish/Welsh or another language.

Funding: IUA Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €47,273–€55,399. Remote working may be possible for up to 2 days per week, but the role is primarily campus-based.

Application deadline: Sunday, 6 September 2026.
